Guides · The configuration

Read the panels before you confirm the window.

A width and height describe the opening. The configuration describes the arrangement of its panels. Check both against the drawing before confirming your selection.

Three arrangements, one explicit legend

In these examples, X means an operable panel and O means a fixed panel. Always confirm the manufacturer's legend and viewing direction. The letters alone do not specify the opening direction, track layout or hardware.

XO

An operable panel beside a fixed panel.

OX

The reverse arrangement in the same viewing direction.

XOX

Two operable panels with a fixed panel between them.

These schematics share one viewing direction and are not to scale. Equal-looking panels here do not establish equal panel widths for a manufactured product.

Confirm the view and the proportions

Ask whether the drawing is viewed from inside or outside. Mark the intended moving panel on that same view. For a three-panel unit, confirm the actual panel widths or stated proportions; an XOX label by itself does not supply those dimensions.

The ES-EL200 product page lists XO, OX and XOX arrangements. Use the drawing for the exact product and glass selection to confirm panel dimensions; a configuration list by itself is not a dimensioned drawing.

A configuration is not a size approval

ES Windows' sliding-window product guidance lists XO, OX and XOX while noting that certifications may not cover every configuration. A listed arrangement therefore does not establish that every requested size, glass package or pressure requirement is supported.

If the exact combination is not supported by the available evidence, SmartWay routes it for review. A reference drawing helps explain the arrangement; it does not replace the applicable manufacturer documents.

Before confirming your opening

  • Match the manufacturer, series, configuration and overall dimensions.
  • Confirm the viewing direction, moving panels and panel proportions.
  • Check frame finish, glass description, screen and hardware selections.
  • Have the exact size and configuration checked against the applicable technical documentation.

Keep uncertain details in the project notes. A photograph or marked drawing can explain the intended operation more clearly than a left/right description alone.

Questions about window configurations

What do X and O mean in a window configuration?
In these guides X is an operable panel and O is a fixed panel. Manufacturers do not all use the same legend, so confirm it, and the viewing direction, on the drawing for your exact product.
Is XO the same as OX?
No. They are the same two panels in the reverse order for one viewing direction. Which side operates depends on whether the drawing is viewed from inside or outside, so mark the intended moving panel on the same view.
Does a listed configuration mean my size is supported?
No. A product can list XO, OX and XOX and still have size, glass and pressure limits that exclude your opening. The exact combination is checked against the applicable documentation, or routed to specialist review.
How do I tell SmartWay which panel should move?
Choose the configuration in the project builder and note the intended moving panel in the project notes. A marked photograph or drawing explains it more clearly than a left or right description.
